Overview

Moving Towards Precision Medicine: Development of a Novel Screening Method for Earliest Detection of Ovarian and Endometrial Cancers
This activity aims to highlight translational research projects conducted at the Rudy Ruggles Biomedical Research Institute and thereby recognize all the resources available for research within the network. Physicians are the primary target audience.

Refreshments will be served.

Objectives
As a result of this educational activity, learners should be better able to:

  1. Recognize the impact that ovarian and endometrial cancers have on women's morbidity and mortality in the United States and Connecticut.
  2. Explain novel genome based screening methods to detect ovarian cancers at an earlier stage.
  3. Develop an approach for sharing the resources of the Research Institute with patients and physician colleagues, including opportunities for eligible patients to enroll in research studies.

Accreditation
Nuvance Health is accredited by the Medical Society of the State of New York to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credits
AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ (1.50 hours), CME - Non-Physician Attendance (1.50 hours)

Case Presentation and Clinical Challenge: Ovarian and Endometrial Cancers
6:00PM - 6:25PM
Cheung Wong, MD

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal of gynecologic cancers.  Endometrial cancer is the most common gynecologic malignancy, and its incidence and associated mortality are increasing. Despite the immediate need to detect these cancers at an earlier stage, there are no effective screening methodologies or protocols. A case description including, past medical history, pathology diagnosis, and treatment options will be presented.
Research
6:25PM - 7:00PM
John A. Martignetti, MD, PhD

The comprehensive, genomics-based analysis of ovarian and endometrial cancers by The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) revealed many of the molecular defects that define these two cancers.  Based on these cancer genome results, and in a prospective study, we hypothesized that the use of ultra-deep, targeted gene sequencing could detect somatic mutations in uterine lavage fluid obtained from women undergoing hysteroscopy as a means of molecular screening and diagnosis.  In an effort to improve the specificity of the test, proteomic analysis is combined with genetic results.
